Why must the user Opt-In to receive WhatsApp messages?

Before you can message a customer using WhatsApp, you must collect their opt-In (i.e. consent) to comply with both WhatsApp requirements and GDPR regulations. This can be done via Online, SMS, Email etc.  

Note: You do not have to specify that messages will be sent via WhatsApp when collecting opt-ins. You must still collect the recipient's mobile phone number and consent to receive subsequent messages prior to messaging them. However, you do not have to specify that the messages will be sent using WhatsApp.
